Emu Bottom Wetlands Reserve
(Sunbury)
Heaps of history
and hectares of pleasant strolling feature among the chief attractions of Emu
Bottom Wetlands Reserve, 3km north of Sunbury along Racecourse Road. Add the
magic of the unique Australian platypus in bordering Jacksons Creek and you have
recreation all laid on. You’re free to visit seven days a week and you can take
your dog with you.
Hume City Council owns and controls the Reserve and Melbourne Water controls the
creek both with the support of the volunteer group 'Friends of Emu Bottom
Wetlands Reserve, Inc.'. This Group was formed in 1993.
If you would like to know more, contact Friends Secretary Garry Bartlett (03)
9744 1923 or the President, Ian Sutherland (03) 9744 1205. Development of the
Platypus Ponds viewing locations and signage near the Jacksons Creek habitats
was a major project. A project to record and interpret the notable history of
the site from its first settlement (1836) (at the same time as Melbourne) is
also under way.
The Group continues with its major project – the restoration of the natural
beauty of the Reserve by the planting (so far, to 2008) of some 20,000 largely
indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses in fulfilling the objectives of the Master
Management Plan relating to the Reserve.
